I found this guy on a pier in north Florida, hustling fish guts for a living. Why do I admire this bird? Not just because of the missing foot, though I didn’t even notice it until I began editing the images — the bird was that agile and quick.
It’s more that it speaks to the resilience of animals and wildlife. I feel certain the loss of this foot wasn’t pretty or neat. The wound was probably sustained in the course of competition for fish gut scraps. Was it a dog? A raccoon? Who knows. But this guy just kept going. ‘Twas just a flesh wound, for him.
