The Columbian Park Zoo in Lafayette, Indiana, has a couple of prairie dogs. I love this exhibit, because I love watching prairie dogs wherever they are. One of my favorite places to watch them is Frenchy’s Park in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I’ve noticed no one seems to know what they are. I know this because everyone keeps asking me if I’m photographing “the groundhogs.”
But my all-time favorite place to photograph them is in the wild, usually in the Badlands of South Dakota or Wind Cave National Park. We’ll be spending a day in that area on the way out to Yellowstone and Glacier this month. Whether I can get my travel partners to let me sit for hours in front of a prairie dog town is an open question.
